Mapping and Vehicle Crash Analysis

Plexus specialises in Google Maps applications, and has been working with the Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA)  to develop a set of cycle resource maps for the Auckland region.   The maps highlight spatial information of interest to cyclists as an aid to route planning.  Phase 1 information includes:
  • MAXX transport hubs
  • Cycle parking
  • Cycle lockers
  • Cycle rentals
  • Cycle shops
  • Cycle-friendly cafes
  • Learn to ride locations
  • School travel plans
  • Recreational cycling facilities
  • Council infrastructure and consultation
  • Hazardous locations.
Phase 2 will include cycle lanes, public toilets, and other useful cyclist resource information.

Vehicle crash maps

Plexus is a registered user of CAS, the Ministry of Transport's Crash Analysis System.  Every injury crash involving a motor vehicle reported to the Police is entered into CAS, allowing traffic engineers to extract and report on crash trends and blackspots.

Plexus has developed an algorithm to extract subsets of crash records and load them to Google Maps, thus making them easily and freely available to the general public.

The map above shows cycle vs motor vehicle crashes on Auckland's North Shore.  Selection criteria are broad, and generated maps can be  filtered on (and using different symbology for):
  • Geographic location
  • Vehicle types - cars, trucks, motor cycles, bicycles, pedestrians etc
  • Date/time
  • Movement codes
  • Cause codes
  • Environmental conditions
  • Traffic controls
  • Injury types.
Plexus is happy to work with charity and advocacy groups at reduced rates for the generation of crash maps that facilitate greater use of active and public transport modes, and environmental sustainability generally.
